Does Rain Drain Through Artificial Turf?
Yes, rain drains through artificial turf when the backing is perforated and the base underneath is open and compacted correctly. The turf itself is rarely the problem. In Inland Empire clay yards, the base rock and the grade decide whether water leaves in minutes or sits for days.

Most backing has drainage holes, roughly 0.25 inch across, spaced every few inches. Water passes through them into the base. That is the easy part.
The hard part is what is under it. Last winter we pulled turf from a 900 square foot backyard in Hemet where the previous installer laid it over native clay with a 1 inch skim of decomposed granite. After the first storm it held water like a tray. I stood on it and my boots left puddles.
What the base needs to do
We haul out old soil and sod to a depth of about 4 inches, then bring back Class II base rock, compacted in lifts with a plate compactor. On a 1,000 square foot yard that is roughly 12 to 14 tons. We grade the surface at about 1 percent, around 1/8 inch of fall per foot, to move water toward a drain or off the property, not toward the house.
Why clay changes the job
Inland Empire clay drains slowly, often under 0.5 inch per hour once it is saturated. Rock alone does not fix a yard that is a bowl. On a recent San Jacinto job we ran a hose for 20 minutes before we ordered a single ton of rock, just to see where the water went.
| Condition | What happens in rain | Our fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thin base over clay | Ponding for days | Deeper base, regrade |
| Properly compacted Class II base | Water passes through and moves off | Standard install |
| Yard that slopes toward the house | Water pushes at the foundation | Regrade or add a drain |
What it costs to get it right
A full install with proper base typically runs $8 to $12 per square foot in our area. Redoing a failed install costs more, because we pay twice to remove the old turf and the bad base. In the Hemet yard, the redo added about $1,800 for extra excavation and a French drain tied to the street.
Pet yards are different
Urine needs to rinse through too. See our pet turf drainage guide for what we do on dog runs.
