What Separates One Turf From Another in Inland Empire Heat

Face weight, backing perforation, and infill decide how synthetic grass holds up in Inland Empire heat. Look for 60 to 90 ounce face weight, a fully perforated dual layer backing, and a 1.5 to 1.75 inch pile. Blade shape and drainage matter more than color or pile height.

We get asked constantly what makes turf good. Most people expect the answer to be a brand. It is not. It is four or five numbers printed on the back of the sample, and once you know what they mean you can read any quote in about ninety seconds.

Face weight is the number that costs money

Face weight is ounces of yarn per square yard, not counting the backing. It is the closest thing to a density rating the industry has. Thin product in the 40 to 55 ounce range mats down in traffic lanes and never stands back up, which is why a three year old cheap lawn shows a permanent path from the slider to the gate.

Most of what we install for residential yards falls between 60 and 90 ounces. Above 90 you are paying for weight the average backyard will never use. Below 60 we will install it if a customer insists on hitting a number, but we tell them what happens by year three.

How do you compare turf specs on a quote?

Line the samples up and read them in this order.

Warranty is the sixth line. The turf we install carries a 16-year manufacturer warranty, and that number is on the spec sheet, not something a salesperson says out loud.

Does pile height matter?

Less than people think. A 2 inch pile looks lush in a sample square and lies over flat in a real yard because there is not enough infill weight per blade to hold it upright. We build most yards at 1.5 to 1.75 inches. That range takes sand well, brushes back up, and does not read like carpet.

Short pile has one real use. Putting greens run a 0.5 inch surface with a 1.5 inch fringe, and green speed comes from sand volume, not blade length.

What about backing and drainage?

This is where the cheap stuff gives itself away. Pull the sample over and look at the perforations. A proper dual layer backing is hole punched on a tight grid across the whole width. Bargain rolls get a sparse pattern near the edges and almost nothing down the middle.

In a Winchester or San Jacinto yard the native soil already swells wet and shrinks hard in July, so the base does most of the drainage work. Four inches of Class II, compacted in two lifts to 90 percent. But when we get the tail end of a monsoon cell coming up out of the Coachella Valley and the yard takes an inch in twenty minutes, a stingy backing puddles and the base cannot help it.

Seams are the other backing issue. Stiff dual layer backing holds a glued and taped seam flat. Floppy single layer backing wants to curl at the cut, and that curl is what you see as a visible line two summers later.

Which specs matter for dogs?

Different priorities. Face weight still matters for traffic lanes, but backing perforation and infill matter more, because urine has to move down and out rather than sit in the thatch. What we tell people to ask for

When you have three bids sitting on the counter, ask each installer for these five things in writing:

  • Face weight in ounces per square yard
  • Backing type and whether it is fully perforated
  • Base depth and compaction target
  • Infill type and pounds per square foot
  • Warranty length and who honors it

Any installer who will not put those on paper is quoting a picture, not a product.

Residential installs in our service area generally run $9 to $14 per square foot with the base and infill included. Two identical yards can land at opposite ends of that spread purely on face weight and access. That is the honest version.
