Artificial turf installation in California Oaks and Copper Canyon
Artificial turf installation in California Oaks and Copper Canyon runs $9 to $14 per square foot for residential yards. Most Murrieta backyards take two to four working days over a four inch compacted base, and the turf we install carries a 16 year manufacturer warranty on the fiber.
The tracts off Clinton Keith Road and Whitewood Road sit on cut and fill pads. That shows up the first time we probe a yard. One side of the lawn reads firm under a steel rod and the other gives under a boot, and the two halves settle at different rates for years after the builder leaves.
So we dig both sides the same. No exceptions.
What we hit on Murrieta lots
Copper Canyon backyards mostly fall toward a rear fence or a slope easement. The old lawn was usually fighting that grade instead of using it, which is why the bottom third stays soggy and the top third burns out by June. We regrade the pad to a consistent one to two percent fall and let the drainage holes in the backing do the rest.
The other thing out here is buried irrigation. These lawns were run on pop-up rotors with lateral lines at eight to ten inches, and the lines almost never sit where the homeowner thinks. We hand dig the first pass near valve boxes and cap the laterals we are abandoning rather than cutting and hoping.
Gophers are a real problem on the California Oaks side near the open space. On those yards we run galvanized hardware cloth under the base before the rock goes in. It adds a few hundred dollars. It also means nobody is pulling up a seam in year two to chase a tunnel.
What does artificial turf cost in Murrieta?
Residential turf lands between $9 and $14 per square foot installed. The spread is mostly access and demolition. A flat back yard with double gate access sits near the bottom. A Copper Canyon slope where every yard of base gets wheelbarrowed 100 feet downhill sits near the top.
| Job type | Typical size | Installed cost | Working days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backyard turf | 600 to 1,200 sq ft | $9 to $14 per sq ft | 2 to 4 |
| Front yard turf with rock borders | 300 to 700 sq ft | $9 to $14 per sq ft | 2 to 3 |
| Backyard putting green | 300 to 700 sq ft | $18 to $28 per sq ft | 2 to 3 |
Those are the numbers we quote. We would rather post them than make you call to find out.
How we build the base
Four inches of Class II base, compacted in two lifts to 90 percent, with water on it. Bender board or steel edge on every perimeter. Six inch galvanized spikes at the edges and through the seams, not landscape staples. Seams glued on a joint board with the grain running the same direction on both panels, because turf laid with opposing grain reads as a stripe the moment the afternoon sun comes across it.
Infill goes in at roughly one and a half to two pounds per square foot and gets power broomed twice. Skip the second pass and the blades lay over in the traffic lanes by fall.
HOA plans in The Colony and California Oaks
Several Murrieta associations want a plan submitted before anything gets torn out. What they typically ask for is the turf footprint, the edge treatment, and where the water goes. We put that on paper for you before the crew shows up, since a stop work notice in the middle of an open excavation is the worst way to spend a Friday in August.
Pet turf and putting greens
A good share of the Murrieta yards we build are a mix. Turf in the dog run, pavers off the slider, decomposed granite along the side yard. There is no rule saying the whole back has to be one surface.
Dog yards get a perforated backing and antimicrobial infill. See our pet-friendly turf page for how that build differs. If you want a green, the contours get cut into the compacted rock and not the turf, which is covered on our putting green page and priced out in what a backyard putting green costs in Temecula.
