SoCal Artificial Turfs installs artificial turf in Canyon Crest, Riverside for $9 to $14 per square foot on typical residential yards. Canyon Crest soil is heavier clay than the sandy pads we work in Hemet, so we build 4 inches of Class II base compacted in two lifts before any turf goes down.

Canyon Crest yards are older than most of what we work on. Homes off Central Avenue and up around Canyon Crest Drive were landscaped when water was cheap, which means big fescue lawns, brass valves, and irrigation laterals that nobody has a map for. We hand dig the first pass around valve boxes for that reason.

Why Canyon Crest soil changes the base build

East Riverside sits on heavier clay than the decomposed granite pads we deal with in San Jacinto and Hemet. Clay holds water and moves with it, so a thin base is how you end up with a wavy yard by year three.

Our build here does not change much house to house. Strip 3 to 4 inches of sod and topsoil, grade to fall away from the slab at roughly a quarter inch per foot, then 4 inches of Class II base compacted in two lifts to 90 percent. On yards that hold water near a patio we add a French line to daylight instead of trusting the turf backing to drain it all.

Turf gets nailed at 4 to 6 inches on the perimeter, seams glued rather than stapled where they land in a sightline, and silica sand brushed in at roughly 2 pounds per square foot to stand the fibers up.

Wind off Box Springs and the canyon edge

Lots that back to Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park catch real wind. On those we run a heavier perimeter nailing pattern and set edging into the base rather than relying on a bender board that will lift the first time a Santa Ana event pushes through.

What turf costs in Canyon Crest

Residential turf runs $9 to $14 per square foot installed. A 500 square foot front yard lands around $4,500 to $7,000. A putting green is a different build at $18 to $28 per square foot, because the contours are cut into the compacted rock rather than into the turf.

What pushes a Canyon Crest job toward the top of the range is access. Several of the streets up there have narrow side gates and mature ficus and pine roots along the property line, and when base has to be wheelbarrowed 100 feet uphill the labor line moves. We will tell you that on the walkthrough, not after.

HOA and front yard rules

Several Canyon Crest tracts have an association that reviews front yard changes. We have had submissions approved and we have had them come back asking for a specific pile height or a border detail. Bring us the guidelines before we finalize the plan and we will spec to them. Changing edging after installation is not a thing we enjoy doing twice.
