The Finishing Touch Your Planter Beds Need

Bark mulch is one of those things that seems simple but makes a massive difference in how your yard looks and functions. A fresh layer of shredded redwood or bark mulch instantly cleans up planter beds, suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and gives your entire landscape a polished, finished look. At SoCal Artificial Turfs, we include mulch installation in many of our full landscape remodels, and we also do standalone mulch jobs for homeowners who just need their beds refreshed.

We primarily use shredded redwood bark because it holds up better in the Inland Empire heat than most alternatives. Redwood is naturally resistant to decay, insects, and fungal growth. It holds its rich, reddish-brown color longer than generic wood chips, and it knits together on the ground surface so it does not blow away in the wind the way lighter mulches do. That matters when you live in an area that gets Santa Ana winds.

Proper mulch installation is more than just dumping bags of material into a bed. We start by clearing out the old, decomposed mulch and any weeds that have taken root. We edge the beds to create clean borders -- either with steel edging, aluminum edging, or by cutting a clean natural edge along the turf or paver line. Then we spread the fresh mulch to a consistent 3 to 4 inch depth, keeping it pulled back from tree trunks and shrub crowns to prevent rot.

For beds with drip irrigation, we lay the mulch over the drip lines so the system is hidden but still functional. The mulch actually helps the drip system work better by slowing evaporation and keeping the soil moist longer between watering cycles.

Mulch is a natural complement to almost every other service we offer. It pairs with artificial turf to fill the planter areas around your turf zone. It works alongside decorative rock to create visual contrast between planted beds and dry landscape areas. And it gives any yard -- new or existing -- a clean, maintained appearance that holds for 12 to 18 months before needing a refresh.

Why Mulch

Benefits of Bark Mulch

Soil Temperature Control

Mulch insulates the soil, keeping roots cooler in summer and warmer on cool nights. In the Inland Empire where ground temps can hit extreme levels, this keeps your plants healthier.

Weed Suppression

A 3 to 4 inch layer of bark mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds in the soil. This dramatically reduces weed growth without the need for chemical herbicides.

Moisture Retention

Mulch slows evaporation and helps the soil hold water longer between irrigation cycles. Your plants get more benefit from every drop, and your water bill stays lower.

Instant Curb Appeal

Nothing freshens up a yard faster than new mulch. A few hours of work and your entire landscape looks maintained, clean, and professional.

What We Install

Mulch Types We Work With

We source our mulch from local suppliers for the best quality and pricing.

Shredded Redwood

Our go-to choice. Rich color, slow decomposition, wind-resistant texture. Naturally repels insects and resists decay in the Inland Empire heat.

Bark Nuggets

Larger bark pieces for a chunkier look. Best for areas where you want a bold texture and do not need a perfectly smooth surface.

Cedar Mulch

Light-colored, aromatic, and naturally pest-resistant. Good option for beds near outdoor living areas where you want a pleasant scent.

Gorilla Hair

Finely shredded redwood bark that knits together tightly. Excellent for slopes where regular mulch would slide or wash away. Stays in place better than any other type.

Common Questions

Bark Mulch FAQ

Both have advantages. Mulch is better for plant health because it breaks down over time and adds nutrients to the soil. It also keeps roots cooler in the summer heat. Rock lasts longer and never needs replacing, but it does not feed the soil. If you have plants, trees, or shrubs in the bed, mulch is usually the better choice. For areas without plants where you just want clean ground cover, rock wins on longevity.

In the Inland Empire heat, bark mulch typically needs refreshing every 12 to 18 months. Shredded redwood holds its color longer than most other mulch types -- usually 12 to 14 months before it starts to fade and thin out. We recommend adding a fresh 1 to 2 inch layer on top rather than removing and replacing the entire bed each time.

We install mulch at 3 to 4 inches deep for new beds. This depth is thick enough to block sunlight from reaching weed seeds in the soil below, but not so thick that it smothers plant roots or traps too much moisture. Around tree trunks, we pull the mulch back a few inches to prevent bark rot.

It depends on the situation. For beds with plants, we generally do not use fabric because the plants need the mulch to break down into the soil over time. For purely decorative mulch beds without plantings, we can install landscape fabric underneath for extra weed prevention. We discuss the best approach for your specific yard during the estimate.
