A Real Lawn, Installed Right

We are known for artificial turf, but we also install natural sod for homeowners who prefer real grass. Some people love the feel of natural grass under their feet, want a lawn for their kids to play on, or simply prefer the look and texture of the real thing. We respect that, and we do sod installations the same way we do everything else -- the right way.

The key to a sod installation that lasts is soil preparation. Most of the Inland Empire has clay-heavy or sandy soil that is not ideal for grass out of the box. We start by removing any existing dead grass, weeds, or debris down to bare soil. Then we amend the soil with organic compost and topsoil to create a nutrient-rich base that roots can actually grow into. We grade the surface for proper drainage away from your house and any hardscape, then rake it smooth and level.

The sod itself is delivered fresh from the farm on the day of installation. We lay it tight, stagger the seams like bricks so there are no visible lines, and roll the entire surface with a sod roller to press the roots into contact with the amended soil beneath. This initial contact is critical -- if the sod is not pressed firmly into the soil, the roots will not take and you will end up with dead patches within weeks.

We recommend warm-season grass varieties for the Inland Empire climate. Bermuda grass is the toughest option -- it handles full sun, heavy foot traffic, and drought better than any other variety available in Southern California. St. Augustine is a good choice if you want a thicker, more lush appearance, but it needs more water and does better with some afternoon shade. We will walk you through the options and recommend the best fit for your yard based on sun exposure, soil conditions, and how you plan to use the space.

After installation, we walk you through the watering schedule that will get your new sod established. The first two weeks are critical -- you need to water 2 to 3 times per day to keep the sod moist while the roots grow into the soil below. After that, you can gradually taper down to a regular watering schedule. We will explain exactly what to do and when, so you do not have to guess.

If you are on the fence between sod and artificial turf, we are happy to discuss the pros and cons of each during your free estimate. We install both, and we will give you an honest recommendation based on your priorities -- budget, maintenance willingness, water usage, and how you use your yard.

Why Sod

Benefits of Natural Sod

Nothing Beats the Real Feel

Natural grass has a texture, smell, and coolness that synthetic products cannot fully replicate. If the real thing matters to you, sod delivers it.

Lower Upfront Cost

Sod installation typically costs less upfront than artificial turf. If budget is a primary concern and you do not mind the ongoing maintenance, sod can be the more affordable option initially.

Natural Cooling Effect

Real grass stays cooler than artificial turf in direct sunlight. In the Inland Empire summer, a natural lawn can be 20 to 30 degrees cooler to the touch than synthetic turf.

Instant Curb Appeal

Sod gives you a fully green, established-looking lawn on day one. No waiting for seed to germinate or patches to fill in. You go from dirt to green in a single day.

Common Questions

Sod Installation FAQ

Sod is real, living grass that is grown on a farm and transplanted to your yard. It requires regular watering, mowing, fertilizing, and ongoing maintenance to stay healthy. Artificial turf is a synthetic product that looks and feels like grass but requires almost no maintenance and no water. Sod costs less upfront but more over time due to water and care costs. Artificial turf costs more upfront but saves money long-term. We install both and can help you decide which makes more sense for your situation.

New sod needs heavy watering during the first two weeks to establish roots. Plan on watering 2 to 3 times per day for 10 to 15 minutes per session during the establishment period. After the first two weeks, you can gradually reduce to once per day, and eventually to 2 to 3 times per week once the roots are fully established, typically after 4 to 6 weeks. In the Inland Empire heat, summer installations require even more attention to watering during establishment.

Sod typically takes 2 to 3 weeks to begin rooting into the soil and 4 to 6 weeks to fully establish. During this time, you should avoid heavy foot traffic on the new grass. You will know the sod is rooted when you gently tug on a corner and it does not lift easily. Full establishment in Inland Empire conditions depends on the season -- spring and fall installations root faster than summer installations because the grass is not fighting extreme heat stress.

We typically recommend warm-season grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine for the Inland Empire climate. Bermuda grass is the most drought-tolerant option and handles full sun and heavy foot traffic well. St. Augustine provides a thicker, lusher appearance but needs more water and does better with some shade. We will recommend the best variety for your specific yard based on sun exposure, intended use, and how much maintenance you are willing to do.
